چکیده

We describe the protocol development environment for the Totem protocol, a fault-tolerant communication protocol that provides fast reliable ordered message delivery and membership services. The protocol development environment is a distributed discrete-event simulator that provides a testbed for the controlled testing and debugging of the Totem protocol. Unlike many other protocol simulation environments, the Totem protocol development environment directly executes the implementation code of the protocol being simulated instead of a model of the protocol. Executing the implementation code of the protocol in the simulator facilitates both the testing and debugging of the protocol. Modifications and design changes to the protocol are directly reflected in both the simulation and the implementation.

Monitoring Membership Changes in a Fault-Tolerant Distributed System

The Totem protocol supports the maintenance of consistency of replicated information in fault-tolerant distributed systems by providing reliable totally ordered delivery of messages. The membership algorithm of Totem maintains a consistent view of processors in a local-area network and handles all aspects of reconnguration, including restarting of failed processors and remerging of partitioned ...

A reliable ordered delivery protocol for interconnected local area networks

We present the Totem multiple-ring protocol, a novel reliable ordered multicast protocol for multiple interconnected local-area networks. The protocol exhibits excellent performance and maintains a consistent network-wide total order of messages despite network partitioning and remerging, or processor failure and recovery with stable storage intact. The Totem protocol is designed for fault-tole...

The Totem Redundant Ring Protocol

Group communication protocols greatly simplify the design of fault-tolerant distributed systems. Most of those protocols focus on node redundancy rather than on network redundancy. The Totem Redundant Ring Protocol allows the use of multiple redundant local-area networks. The partial or total failure of a network remains transparent to the application processes. The distributed system remains o...

Probabilistic Bounds on Message Delivery for the Totem Single-Ring Protocol

For fault-tolerant real-time distributed systems, the probability that a message is not delivered within its real-time deadline must be small enough that it does not adversely aaect system reliability. We investigate the delivery of messages for the Totem Protocol, a reliable ordered broadcast protocol that we have developed for fault-tolerant distributed systems with physical broadcasts over a...
